Parent-drones or carrier drones are large UAVs capable of carrying a number of smaller combat drones to perform combat missions at long range.
Such drones can be either an aircraft or copter type and perform as a repeater for communication between the operator and combat drones.
The parent-drone system consists of a large parent-drone, small combat drones, and a ground control station. If necessary, it can be equipped with various types of surveillance modules (thermal, day-vision), warheads, and communication means for a specific combat mission.
Advantages of a parent-drone:
◾️ long destruction range – aircraft-type drones can operate at a distance of more than 100 km
◾️ high-precision strikes – destroys priority targets, such as parked aircraft, EW means, air defense and military infrastructure
◾️ personnel safety – operators can control drones from a safe distance
◾️ high cost-effectiveness – the cost of a mission is measured in thousands of dollars, while a single missile strike can cost $3-5 million.
There are cases of using artificial intelligence in parent-drones for automatic targets identification and destruction. Such systems can operate without GPS using visual-inertial navigation, due to which they are EW-resistant.
